CC3235SF: Choosing an external dual band antenna for CC3235SF

Part Number: CC3235SF

I want to add an external dual-band antenna to the CC3235SF launchpad. I need recommendations for a good antenna that will increase the range. I have seen several antennae that match the specs of the recommended M830520 dual-band antenna. So, which one is better?

  • Hi,

We will look into it and get back to you ASAP. Please bear with us.

  • Nada,

Is increasing your range your only goal?

In order to meet regulatory certification requirements, the following antennas listed in the table below should be used. This list is from our certification reports which can be downloaded from here. Essentially, you would fail regulation if you use an antenna with a gain higher than 2.5dBi for 2.4GHz band and 4.5dBi for the 5GHz band.

  • what are the regulatory certification requirements? and who decides if I failed the regulations or not?

  • Hi,

Each country have own regulatory requirements. Reason for this regulatory is protect RF spectrum. If your device does not meet regulatory (certification) requirements it cannot be used at that country. In case of your device is used without regulatory approval it is a violating of law and you can be prosecuted according law.

For more information please contact your certification lab.

  • My goal is to increase the range, so which antenna, from what you suggested, will increase the range?

  • Hi,

I am sorry, but I am not able answer your question. It cannot be easily say which one is better for you.

But you should not forget that antenna is a passive element. That means it cannot radiate more energy than you put into. But if you use directional instead of omnidirectional antenna you can focus RF power to one direction and by this increase range. Be aware that this may to be violating of law depending of your application.

At this video are described important aspects of RF design.
