CC3120MOD: Current consumption in connected mode.

Part Number: CC3120MOD
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC3120

Hi,

I use the CC3120MOD and measuring the current consumption after sl_WlanConnect  is about 4mA.

The board is custom and the average current consumption of the board is ~20uA.

According to the datasheet swrs205c in idle connected mode average current consumption is 690uA.

The Wi-Fi is only connected to the AP, there is no Wi-Fi transmissions.

Attached here is a current consumption profile (span is 1sec.), when Wi-Fi is connected to the AP.

Connection policy is : SL_WLAN_CONNECTION_POLICY(1, 1, 0, 0)

PM policy is Normal: SL_WLAN_NORMAL_POLICY

LSI_DURATION_IN_MSEC = 100

Best regards,

Ilian

  • What is the AP you connected to?

Can you provide air sniffer logs? it seems that we are frequently waking up to receive broadcast data but i'm not sure.

Can you also test with LSI > 100ms?

The noise between the beacons needs also to be investigated, it doesn't seem to be related to the cc3120.

  • Hi,

the router is Dlink DIR - 825ACG1.

    Beacon period 100

    DTIM 1

I can not provide air sniffer logs.

Yes, I can test with LSI > 100ms, but if "Idle connected with DTIM 1". mean beacon intervals 100ms, I should have the current consumption with LSI 100, near to 690uA.

Yes it seems that the RF receiver is opened every 100ms.

Yes the peaks in intervals, between,  when the receiver is open (50mA peaks) may be are not related to CC3120MOD. Increasing the average value of current consumption is causes from 50mA peaks.

Isn't it normal the receiver to be opened on every beacon transmission, when LSI =100ms  and DTIM = 1?

    Best regards,

    Ilian

  • Hi,

attached here is current profiles for LSI 100ms, 200ms and 500ms.

There is one phenomena, which can be seen on picture WiFi 100_200ms high current.

Every about 10sec there ih a high current consumption, due to the receiver (may be) is open for about 1sec -  picture below.

Picture WFi 100_200ms show the current profiles, with LSI = 100ms (left graph) and LSI = 200ms.(right) - picture below

Picture WIFI 500ms show profile,, when LSI = 500ms. - picture below

What could be the reason for opening the receiver for very long time? (first picture)

AP settings are: beacon period 100 and DTIM 1.

    Best regards,

    Ilian

  • I'm not sure what is the reason for the 10 seconds event.

We need to see air sniffer logs to understand what is being sent/received.

Basically the device looks as expected (waking up at the required interval for receiving the beacons).

It seems that many beacons causes the device to wait for some data (probably some kind of broadcast). This can be specific to this AP.

But every 10 seconds the device somehow gets out of low power (it is not clear what is the reason). how long is this interval (when the device consume 60mA)? the power logs don't show when it goes back to normal behavior.

Please try to compare the behavior using another AP.
