CC3220MOD: RF Placement and Routing Change

Part Number: CC3220MOD
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC3200MOD

Hi Team,

We are working on an application utilizing CC3200MOD which was designed in 2016. When creating the design we utilized the launchpad/datasheet layout recommendations. We are interested in migrating to CC3220MOD and are looking at some of the differences. The board has already been qualified so we do not want to make changes unless necessary. Looking at the suggested layout of CC3220MOD for the RF input/output (pin 31), specific dimensions are called out in section 10.3.2 Figure 10-3 for layout around the pin. This differs from the recommendation for CC3200MOD (section 10.5.1, figure 10-2). Why was this made and what are the advantages? Is this change necessary? Appreciate your help on this!

Regards,

Garret

  • Hi Garret,

The change to remove the GND copper on the top layer around this pin is necessary to ensure optimal RF performance. The absence of this keep-out will result in a degradation.

In addition, see the CC3220 hardware design checklist and select the "Migration-MOD" tab to view the differences between the CC3200MOD and CC3220MOD hardware.
