WL1835MOD: How to use WiLink8 with Kernel 5.4?

We are evaluating WL1835MOD on an IMX6 platform. The Linux system is based on Yocto release Zeus, which uses kernel 5.4. As we understood it, any modern kernel should work. This was described in the earlier instructions, and also in the latest WiLink8 Linux Wi-Fi Driver User Guide at https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/swru561a/swru561a.pdf :

"1. Download the Kernel (4.19+) and platform SDK"

However, when we look at git://git.ti.com/wilink8-wlan/build-utilites.git it seems that actually only kernel 4.9.38 is supported...? "./build_wl18xx.sh patch_kernel" fails with an error. How can we use WiLink8 with kernel 5.4?

We have found this branch: https://git.ti.com/cgit/ti-linux-kernel/ti-linux-kernel/log/?h=ti-linux-5.4.y Is this one usable/supported?

Hi,

WiLink8 R8.8 release is based on kernel 4.19.

We have not tested WiLink8 kernel 5.4 yet, but you might be able to use in-tree WiLink8 drivers in kernel 5.4

We have managed to integrate the patches with the 5.4 kernel now. This is what we had to do:

Cleaned up 0001 (mesh_hwmp.c patching wrt whitespace and indentation). Still compatible with 4.19. Then we ported to 5.4.
Patch 0006: Needs revert of kernel commit 608fd7214323bd3bb2c288f68253e5bb634d4f49
0016 and 0017 needs minor adaptions to 5.4

Still wondering which is the proper Git repository? https://software-dl.ti.com/ecs/WiLink8/R8_8/WiLink8_R8.8_manifest.html refers to:

Location	git.ti.com/.../R8.8
Obtained from	git.kernel.org/.../wireless-testing.git

However, these have not been changed in years, and the first link does not even have a R8.8 branch.

Hi,

I believe we need to update https://git.ti.com/wilink8-wlan/wl18xx/trees/R8.8 for "wl18xx" repository. Thanks for pointing it out. For R8.8 , we changed the release process and uploaded only kernel patches instead of using "wl18xx" kernel unlike previous releases. So it shouldn't matter, since the build script applies patches directly to the kernel defined in the setup env file.

Can you pls share the kernel patches that you ported to kernel 5.4 ?
