WL1837MOD: Throughput impact of using BT Classic and BLE simultaneously

Part Number: WL1837MOD
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: WL1837

We're implementing a design that uses the WL1837MOD to connect to up to 3 devices on Bluetooth classic, while also scanning for BLE beacons. Can you confirm two things:

1. Will scanning for BLE beacons lessen the throughput on Bluetooth classic connections? If so, by how much? Section 6.3 of the datasheet says BLE has "Independent low energy buffering allowing many multiple connections with no affect on BR-EDR performance," but I wasn't sure if that applied to our specific use case.

2. Is there a limit to how many beacons the WL1837 can receive info from? There's a BLE connection limit of 10 devices, but I'm under the impression that beacons (advertising only) don't count toward the connection limit.

Thanks,

Sarah

  • Hi Sarah,

    1. No, scanning for BLE beacons should not affect BT classic functionality. BLE functionality is handled on a separate coprocessor, while BT classic runs on the main controller MCU.

    2. No, there isn't a specified upper bound on the max number of beacons that the WL1837 can receive info from.
