CC3220MODA: Moving Away from Modules - Reference Designs and Tips

Part Number: CC3220MODA

Hi There!

We are currently using the CC3220MODASM2MONR in our design. In order to lower costs, we are considering directly integrating the CC3220RM2ARGKR (we would lose the extra security features, as I understand) and going through the FCC certification process.

I guess my first question is: is this a generally advisable route? I was hoping we wouldn't have too much trouble with the antenna and that there were reference designs we could more or less implement. I've seen some reference schematics in the datasheet, but I am not clear if this is a minimal viable design or not.

The main issue driving this is that in sourcing the components, the per chip cost from our assembly house is quite high.

Thanks!

  • Hi Jay09,

The benefits of using the module over the IC is that you can leverage the pre-certification (saves cost) and easier PCB layout (saves time). Using the module also minimizes risk of EMI issues.

FYI - for the non-module version the maximum supported sFLASH size is 256 Mbit. The module contains a 32Mbit sFLASH, which is also something to consider.
