Hi,

I have been using the SmartConfig application on my iPhone for sending wifi credentials to my CC3200 launchpad and it has been working fine. Recently, I updated to iOS8. The SmartConfig app appears to work the same, but the CC3200 never connects to a WLAN network. I've confirmed that sending wifi credentials still works using the SmartConfig app on an Android device.

Is it possible that iOS8 broke the app and it needs an update?

SmartConfig on iOS 8 is working fine for me.

I tested on an iphone 5 w/ iOS 8 and SmartConfig works. But, on my new iPhone 6, SmartConfig doesn't work.

What hardware were you guys using?

Hi Daniel,

You are correct. My initial test was using iPhone 5 with iOS8. After reading your comment I test it with iPhone 6 with iOS8 and it didn't work. The problem obviously isn't the OS but the device network chip. TI can you confirm the results and explain if this will be a permanent limitation to provision using smart config?

Hi All,

We've tested with an iPhone6 with iOS 8.0.2 and it's working fine. Can you please share your:

iPhone6 model (iPhone6 or iPhone6+)
iOS version
The devices tab of the app. Make sure your CC3200 is not on the list.

Does SimpleLink Wi-Fi Starter work for Iphone4s iOS 8. As you can see from the link below, I am having trouble detecting my CC3200 Launchpad using SimpleLink Wi-Fi Starter.

I already got the IP address using TI SmartConfig App. I got the IP printed out at Serial Console. But, the TI SImpleLink WiFi Starter App still does not work.

Tera Term Output:

"Device is in STA Mode, Connect to the AP[jefwifi] and typeIP address [192.168.254.102] in the browser".

But, when I type 192.168.25.4.102\main.html at google chrome, the website does not show up. Any ideas why?

Just a typographical error. The correct IP is 192.168.254. I am now able to view the webpage at google chrome.

Did further testing and the SmartConfig is working fine with iPhone 6 and iOS 8.0.2

May I ask what changed in your testing to make you arrive at a different result?

I still cannot get SmartConfig to work with iPhone6. Using the same SmartConfig product with the same app but on an iPhone5, 4s and iPads works fine.

The iPhone6 has iOS 8.0.2

Since TI staff is apparently too indifferent to provide and answer, I'll answer my own question:

This *was* broken, but TI has fixed it in the latest revision of the firmware - it seems they just forgot to mention it.

TI's nonchalant attitude towards these showstopper bugs and the consequences faced by their customers is beyond words.

revamping the thread. Last posts in this thread were written at around the time Apple declared that from February 2015 iOS apps should be written with 64bits support. developer.apple.com/.../

One of my devs says that with the smartconfig iOS library provided at the moment by TI (which is 32bit) it is impossible to compile an application for iOS8 and iOS9 and that anyway it will not be accepted on the store. Is this correct? If the application works on iOS devices I am sure there must be a workaround to have it working even with a 32-bit library linked.

Hi all,

The Smart Config library inside the iOS Wi-Fi Starter app is already compiled into 64 bit, even though the app itself is only running in 32bit. This means your development based on the Smart Config library will comply with Apple's 64-bit requirement.

We've verified the Smart Config to be working on iOS8 devices, given that your Wi-Fi environment is running on 2.4GHz band and SISO20 configuration. This is a known limitation as stated on our wiki page. When performing Smart Config, please make sure either the mobile device or the AP is running in 2.4GHz SISO20 configuration to ensure the SmartConfig packets can be received by the CC3100/CC3200 devices.

If problem still exist after these checking, please kindly provide your device model, OS version, and AP configuration information in order to let us check.

I just ran into this issue for the first time. I recently upgraded from an iPhone 5S to an iPhone 6S and SmartConfig is no longer working. The only difference is the model iPhone, both are on iOS 9.0.2 and I've had nothing but success with the 5S but never got it working with the 6S. I'm scared. Is there a solution for this?

EDIT: Looking at the tear down of both devices it seems that the Wifi module has changed. Is that a hint?

My AP is definitely broadcasting at 2.4Ghz but I'm not sure if I can change the SISO mode. I have a ASUS RT-N66R and I tried to hunt down SISO20 with no luck. I'm not sure what that does...

Hi Craig,

In your RT-N66R WiFi settings screen, you should have an option to set the channel bandwidth to 20 or 40MHz. However, the option to use a specified number of antenna may not exist, depending on the router software.

If possible, can you please try a simpler router with only one antenna and test?

Hi David,

SmartConfig have been verified to be working on all iOS device and all OS version above 6.0.

The reason of failure in your testing is probably because the Wi-Fi environment is not meeting the requirement (Please check here). Essentially, when performing Smart Config, you'll need to make sure the Wireless signal being transmitted in the air is 2.4GHz, SISO, 20Mhz bandwidth, and no proprietary modulation.
