Hi everyone,

We have a strange situation with a customer's life system running on Z-Stack Linux server and stack version 5.10.00.48.

The customer has about 15 end devices connected to the system which are working fine. He can remove devices but he is unable to add new devices. When opening the network, there is the WK_SET_PERMIT_JOIN_REQ command in the log and it looks like it has been executed correctly without error.

However, in the sniffer log there is no answer to the device's beacons at all. As we would need to get one device paired in order to obtain the key, I cannot say if the system has actually sent a permit joining to the network.

Attached the ZB server's log with high verbosity. We did not find anything particularly useful except a few but not very frequent SRSP timeouts. Maybe a more experienced eye will notice something more useful. The interesting parts starts from line 10423.

Experience with other cases where we were not able to get extended logs tells us that all this will be resolved by a hard reset and restoring configuration but as this is not the first time that we are facing the problem (in the past with 4.x stack versions), it would be useful to understand why this happens.

Hi Peter,

I have a few thoughts on this based on limitations from the ZNP firmware:

SysCfg -> Z-Stack -> Network -> Network Maximum Device List (generates NWK_MAX_DEVICE_LIST in default/syscfg/ti_zstack_config.h) determines the maximum number of devices which can directly connect to the ZC TC node at any given point, which is 20 by default.
SysCfg -> Z-Stack -> Network -> Maximum Unique TC Link Keys (generates ZDSECMGR_TC_DEVICE_MAX in default/syscfg/ti_zstack_config.h) determines the maximum total number of devices a ZC TC node can allow to join the network.

Depending on how/when devices are removed from the network, it may be possible for the TC's key tables to be full if old devices have not aged out or been fully removed. On that note, please see this fix for ZDSecMgrAPSRemove when using a ZNP v3.40+ solution: e2e.ti.com/.../947947

Default ZDSECMGR_TC_DEVICE_MAX is 40. One ZC and 40 routers works well. I tried to add another routers but fail to join the network. Device announcement can be received on ZC, but can't join the nwk.

Do you try to increase ZDSECMGR_TC_DEVICE_MAX to see if you can add more routers?

For Peter's case, we use SDK 5.10.00.48 and CC1352P2, what would be the maximum value for NWK_MAX_DEVICE_LIST?? Thank you

By default, it’s 20 but you can increase according to your application requirement.

Hi YK, thanks for your answer. Yes, of course. But how much? I would like to have the maximum amount possible, and according to the documentation this depends on the memory of the MCU. So what would be a maximum advisable amount?

Hi Randy,

Theoretically this number can be fairly large, but practically it will be difficult for the ZC to handle a large number of directly connected devices depending on network traffic, report intervals, and join times. There is no definitive number which I can provide. If the devices are routers then you would need to increase MAX_NEIGHBOR_ENTRIES and if using all Zigbee 3.0 devices then ZDSECMGR_TC_DEVICE_MAX should be increased accordingly. Please be aware of the Z-Stack User's Guide -> Non-volatile Memory Items in regards to increasing NV memory allocation corresponding to an increase in NWK_MAX_DEVICE_LIST/ZDSECMGR_TC_DEVICE_MAX/NWK_MAX_ADDRESSES.

Hi Ryan,

I understand. But just to put some value for now, using CC1352P, could 200 be a reasonable value for MWK_MAX_DEVICE_LIST and ZDSECMGR_TC_DEVICE_MAX CC1352P and 100 for MAX_NEIGHBOR_ENTRIES?

You can try to use those values and if application can be built successfully, it should be fine. However, it might have problem in real world to have 200 end devices connecting to single parent.

MWK_MAX_DEVICE_LIST is total devices or devices connected to a single parent (router/coordinator)?

So MAX_NEIGHBOR_ENTRIES is the routers and MWK_MAX_DEVICE_LIST is the devices connected directly to the coordinator, correct? In this case we could set MAX_NEIGHBOR_ENTRIES to have up to 100 routers and MWK_MAX_DEVICE_LIST to 30 to have up to 30 devices connected to each router or respectively the coordinator directly?

MAX_NEIGHBOR_ENTRIES is for keep records of the routers under radio coverage and MWK_MAX_DEVICE_LIST is the size of association table which stands for max numbers of end devices connecting to a router/coordinator. Those parameters can be set on each routers and coordinator.
