CC2652R7: Varnish treatment

Part Number: CC2652R7

Hi Team,

Our customer is interested in CC2652R7, they want to do the varnish treatment. it seems the target durable life of their development system is around 10 years. Is there any problems or limitations for this treatment?

Can I have your expert’s advice/comments on this, please?

Best regards,

Miyazaki

  • Miyazaki-san,

Thanks for your inquiry. I am consulting with some colleagues to see if anyone has experience with this process.

One thing that will definitely help any assessment about this is to at least have the composition of the varnish, so a packaging or chemist expert could at least have an idea on what is being used.

    Regards,

    Rafael

  • Miyazaki-san,

I received information from other colleagues more knowledgeable than I on varnish and packaging. They highlighted two basic aspects of the varnish to be applied:

    - Electrical conductivity. Be sure the coating would not cause the device to fail EMC and functionality in general due to its intrinsic conductivity.

    - Thermal Expansion. During the normal operation of the product, cracks in solders or pad liftings may occur if the coating material has a very different CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) than the device or the rest of the circuit.

Unfortunately, given the wide variety of conformal coatings and varnishes, we (TI) cannot recommend or suggest a type to be used.

    Hope this helps,

    Rafael
