association while binding

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: Z-STACK

hello all,

1) when we bind two devices, does it automatically associates them to each other? Suppose I have a coordinator with two ZED(light) connected to it, then a router(ON/OFF Switch) joins the network through the coordinator. I created a binding between the router(switch) and ZEDs(lights) so, does it mean that the router gets associated with the ZEDs?

2) If  we have an already established zigbee network and we want to introduce a new device(router) in a network, we introduced it through another router already present in the network, so will our new device be only connected to that router(that was already part of network) or it will form a mesh and gets connected to all other router devices(of same network) in range? And if it forms a mesh, How?

  • 1. What do you mean "router gets associated with the ZEDs"? If you create binding between the router(switch) and ZEDs(lights) , it mean that switch can send on/off/toggle command to the binding lights.

    2. Basically, a new joined router will enter the mesh network and communicate with the coordinator or routers in radio coverage.

  • 1. I mean does the router come in the neighbor table of the ZED and vice versa?

    2. but does it get its details entered in the neighbor table of all other routers in range?

  • 1. Neighbor table is only used by coordinator and router, not ZED.

    2. What do you mean "its details"?

  • Hello siddharth,

    1) The ZR will not be associated with the ZEDs just because they are bound, this is reserved for the ZC parent of the ZED children.

    2) Routers within range of each other within the same network will automatically form a mesh through the Z-stack routing layer.  Neighbors are provided in Link Status Messages of routing devices and can be further reported with use of the Zstackapi_ZdoMgmtLqiReq Z-Stack API.

  • Thank you Ryan.

    I have few more questions:

    1) what will happen in case when the coordinator goes off(power loss), because as far as I observed, when my coordinator goes off, still my switch can turn on and off my lights. How is this happening?

    2) If the mesh gets formed automatically, then why I could not see my end devices in the neighbour table of my router?

  • 1. Coordinator is major for forming Zigbee network and manage device joining process. When it's turned off, the mesh network still works and that's why your switch can still turn on and off lights.

    2. What do you mean "If the mesh gets formed automatically"? Anyway, end device would only appear in association list of its parent node and won't show in neighbor table of any router.

  • What do you mean "If the mesh gets formed automatically"?

I had previously alluded to how Zigbee routing is handled by the pre-built Z-Stack libraries and not controlled by the user.
