CC2530: Receiver sensitivity

Part Number: CC2530
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2340R5

Tool/software:

Dear sir,

Could you advise me why the receiver sensitivity is requested by -85dBm per note [1]? I cannot see the relationship between receiver sensitivity and note 1.

Note [1]: Difference between center frequency of the received RF signal and local oscillator frequency.

Zigbee is good at long range transmission, but -85dbm is absolutely a very high value which will cause a very short distance transmission.

Thanks

John

  • Hi John,

    Thank you for reaching out.

You ask a good question and I'll agree the datasheet might be misleading on this point. I believe the reference to "[1]" has been missed across the datasheet updates, but it should refer to the Zigbee spec.

    To your question,

Here is the way to read this line:

    • The receiver sensitivity at TA = 25°C, VDD = 3 V, and fc = 2440 MHz is -97 dBm (typical) and -92 dBm (max).
    • On the whole device's operating range (TA = –40°C to 125°C, VDD = 2 V to 3.6 V, and fc = 2394 MHz to 2507 MHz), the max sensitivity is -88 dBm.
    • The Zigbee spec requires -85 dBm sensitivity (i.e. this device is compliant)

As of the note "Difference between center frequency of the received RF signal and local oscillator frequency.", this actually applies to the Frequency error tolerance - note that the reference is between parenthesis. As you mentioned, this has no relationship to the sensitivity.

I'll report these findings to the team so we can improve the datasheet in the future.

    Thank you for your understanding,

    Best regards,

  • Hi John,

Please allow me one more piece of information - If you are starting on a new project, I would recommend also considering a newer device such as the CC2340R5.

I'll be happy to further assist you on this topic,

    Best regards,

  • Dear Sir,

Thank you for your reply and the additional information about the new part CC2340R5.

    Have a nice day.
