sensor reading design with CC2480 ZigBee RF processor...

Hi everyone....,

Could anybody can tell me what is the maximum distance i can communicate with CC2480 ZigBee processor with a normal PCB flat antenna...?

I want to read some sensor through a Zigbee RF link..... and how much distance i can go with CC1111 (Sub 1-GHz) ..?

Can anyboby answer me...? Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

    there is never really a guarantee when looking at range.  This is because there are simply too many factors.  Design, Antenna, Environment, transmit strength, radio settings and protocol, etc etc.

    Therefore we always hesitate to speak about range.

    The best this to do is always test in your environment of use.  Also note the CC1111 is not a Zigbee radio.

    Although this may not be what you see in your case (as mentioned there are many factors that come into play)

    Line of sight for a very compact design ... typical might be

    2.45Ghz - 25-30m

    868MHz - approx 100m 

    But as mentioned there is no guarantee these apply in your case.  You may find better or worst.

    Thanks for the reply post. Yes i know that CC1111 is not Zigbee and its Sub 1GHz band.. I was thinking about two ways to carry out my case...

    But do you really sure about the distances you mentioned..? I think with 2.45GHz its should be able to communicate more distance than 868MHz..... I think higher the Frequency distance also go higher with or without LOS.

    By the way what is the best plan if i need to have distance more than 200M....

    First of all lower frequency = more range.  868MHz will give you more range than 2.45GHz.

    Regarding more than 200m of range ...  at 2.45GHz ... this will be difficult with a compact design (ie chip antenna, compromise design for size etc).  With a good non-compact design, this should be feasible without an amplifier in most cases.    However, as mentioned range is dependant on many things.
