I'm looking a ways of creating a low power, short range voice network of about 5 users with simultanious real-time low/medium voice comms and without a PTT function. Does anyone have any experience of using Zigbee for anything like this? Is it possible with suitable codecs?

In theory, the bandwidth of ZB is 250kbps and not even suitable for streaming voice.

OK, but there are codecs which reduce required data, eg GSM-HR which apparantly only needs about 100 KBit/sec. I know even this isn't really low enough but maybe there are better codecs.

AMR can have a very low bitrate to voice.

Yes, AMR does look good, but so far I can't find a TI device which implements it at low power - do you know if there is such a thing?

As I know, there is no dedicated SOC for AMR codec. However, you can use ARM cortex-M3 or M4 to do AMR codec and use CC2530 as RF media to do the streaming.
