I have just started a project that requires a very low power, low data rate wireless connection with a reasonable range. 802.15.4 seems to be the right technology and Zigbee will provide a useful degree of standardization and possible interoperability.

I would appreciate any feedback from the community on whether I should use the 2530 or 2538. The things I need to consider are:

Power consumption in very low duty cycle applications
RF performance
Stability of Zigbee stack software
Stability (and cost) of development tools
Futureproof. Will 2530 be discontinued?

1. There is no big difference in very low duty cycle application between CC2530 and CC2538. You can refer to the datasheet of CC2530 and CC2538 for details.

2. There is no big difference in RF performance.

3. ZStack for both CC2530 and 2538 are stable.

4. Both of them need to use IAR. It is stable but expensive.

5. CC2530 won't be discontinued.

I thought it was possible to use Code Composer/Eclipse to program the 2538. I have downloaded a trial licence from the Ti Web site but I do not have a dev kit to enable me to test it.

If you want to use ZStack, TI only supports IAR. As I know, they don't have a short term plan to porting ZStack to CCS.

We plan to have multi-chain support in the future for ZigBee stack. I would recommend you contact a local TI office for more details on the multi-chain support roadmap.
