Hi,
the board you are mentioning in the link above does not support RF socket.
For a smart meter board design with RF connection, please check this out:

The board is provisioned with a socket for plugging one of the CC253x family, which integrates an 802.15.4 radio that can be used in 6LoWPAN. For instance, you could plug a CC2538 SoC.
So it is technically feasible to use this board design and get a 6LoWPAN stack running on CC2538, with a host SW running on the MSP430 driving it.
Contiki open source 6LoWPAN stack is supported on CC2538 (https://github.com/contiki-os/contiki/tree/master/platform/cc2538dk)
