what is the role of PAN id in the zigbee home Automation system

Dear All,

                 I have to understand what is the pan id role in zigbee home automation explain me in detail .

                I also want to know how connectivity take place between coordinator & router in home automation.

               How Router or another device connect with Coordinator so Explain me network establishment  giving examples as i do not got clear idea in deep.

              Simply explain i have to do communication with 1 zigbee coordinator,1 router & 1 third party device ie.light

.What is the pan id role in the connectivity of third party device to coordinator. How third party found PAN ID to connect to network.  I have to operate light on & off simply with my gateway.
