Best Home automation microcontroller

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F2274, CC2530, MSP430F5438, Z-STACK, MSP430F5438A

Hi,

I designed before a mini kit similar to your "CC2530ZNP" mini kit, it was used for simple ZigBee application. Now, we want to design a ZigBee board for home automation applications. Well, I think your CC2530 is good enough to work as a ZNP but I think that your "MSP430F2274" is not suitable for this kind of applications. So, could anyone guide me for a suitable microcontroller to use it as a ZAP for home automation applications? Buy the way, I remember that someone informed me that I can use the CC2530 for both ZNP and ZAP is this true for home automation, because I need to design a small board and to use only the CC2530 for both ZNP and ZAP would be useful for me.

Aslo, could you guide me to some examples for home automation applications?

Regards,

  • The reference ZAP in Z-Stack is MSP430F5438. If you want to use ZNP and ZAP running on CC2530, I would say this is like a SOC mode. You can build Sample Switch or Sample Light as Coordinator and would server your purpose. However, this depends on how large of your application code is because CC2530 is a resource limited MCU.
  • Thank you YiKai for your answer. Well, from the TI website, I think that the MSP430F5438 is out of use and it was replaced by MSP430F5438A which is not an exact equivalent may be I should make some modifications with the code, also there are not many ZAP example from the ZStack home 1.2.1. One more question if you don't mind, with the the "CC2530ZNP" mini kit, I used to load the CC2530 program by the CC Debugger and the MSP430F2274 by a small board with an USB stick (I forgot its name). If I use the MSP430F5438A normally the MSP-FET430 could load the program on it, right?
  • Yes. If you use the MSP430F5438A, MSP-FET430 could load the program on it.
  • Thank you Yikai. Well, as I am newbie in ZigBee and Home Automation applications, I still have other questions. Well, from the TI documents, I can use for example a ZC for SampleLight application and ZED for SampleSwitch application. I would like to know, can I load many applications in the ZigBee coordinator such as (SampleLight, SampleDoorLock, Sample Temperature Sensor....etc.). If yes, how can I merge two or three ZigBee applications in one application?

    Regards,

  • Yes, you can load many application in Zigbee node. You can refer to http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Multi-endpoint_device_implementation
