Recommended Inductor values in RF antenna circuit for CC2520

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2520

Hi,

What are the recommended Inductor values in the RF Antenna circuit for CC2520? It is not mentioned in the data sheet application circuit or i the eval board BOM. I already gone through the reference design schematic and BOM but i heardly see any value mentioned for TLIN Inductor. Could you please suggest the value for it? If it is Transmission line inductor then can i use an alternate inductor value instead of an Transmission line PCB inductor?

Thank You.

Srikanth

  • Hi Srikanth,

Your post had been assigned to a HW/RF expert, and should be responded to shortly.

  • Hello Srikanth,

Please see the following post about the same topic.

CC2520 has been tested with reference design that has transmission line inductors and it would be best if you can replicate the reference design for the RF portion.

Another option is to use a balun that has been optimized for CC2520 such as Johanson 2450BM15B0002 and also follow the layout guidelines on the balun datasheet.

    Hope this helps.

  • hi Srikanth,

The inductance of the TLIN depends on the PCB stack up and the material used and the pi-filter is optimized to match the antenna on the board as well as to filter harmonics.

You can simulate the filter, in any RF CAD using information from schematic and layout, and find out the inductance of the transmission line. With this starting value, you can then substitute this TLIN with a regular inductor and then tweak the overall filter to optimize for harmonic suppression and antenna match.

If you don't have any RF CAD software, then i will be happy to find out a simulated inductor value for you but then you will still have to optimize the filter values to extract desired performance.

  • I dont have any RF CAD software to perform this. We are planning to have a 4 layer PCB. Could you please let me know the values for it?

Can i use 1.2nH Murata series LQG15HS instead of the integrated inductors in the ref design as specified in one of the post in E2E .

    Thanks

    Srikanth

  • The 1.2 nH was from some simulations done at one point. I could not find out exactly which layout the simulation was based on.

Since we don't have a reference design with a regular inductor I would recommend you to use a balun for CC2520 either from Murata or Johanson. If you have the time and the required equipment you will be able to use regular inductors and adjust the values.
