Regarding ZigBee HA and ZLL Profiles

Hi,

I am trying to understand ZigBee Profiles and I had a question regarding the inter operability between HA and ZLL Profiles Devices.

Suppose I have a HA (Coordinator) Device (TI HA Profile 1.2.2) and there are other HA End Devices (TI Devices + non TI Devices) along with ZLL End Devices (TI Devices + non TI Devices).

Then can this HA (Coordinator) Device, act as a common gateway to all these end devices (HA End Device + ZLL End Device) ?

Also, can this HA (Coordinator) Device, control these end devices i.e. send ON / OFF Commands and other Cluster specific commands which each device may have (device specific Clusters i.e. HVAC / Closure / Lightning / etc.) ?

I have a TI ZLL kit having the ZLL Remote + 3 OSRAM Light Devices. So to do the Light Link Pairing, we need to keep the Remote and the OSRAM Light Device near each other. So is it mandatory for the Coordinator Device and the End Device to have a close proximity to be connected / paired ?

Please do let me know if I need to elaborate the scenario.

When any ZLL device does factory reset, it will act as HA profile and sends beacon request trying to join HA network first. If there is no HA network to join, it will stay on ZLL profile. Basically, a HA gateway has no problem to make TI or other 3rd party ZLL device to join Its HA network and control it.

I still have few questions based on your reply.

I have the ZLL ZLight kit. So you are telling that when I turn on the the ZLL RC, it will act as a HA profile rather than the ZLL profile ?
Suppose, I want to make a HA gateway device (Coordinator), so that this HA gateway device can send ON / OFF and other control commands to ZLL and HA profile devices, and it can also connect to the cloud, then which TI Chipset and TI stack do you suggest ?

It mentions that the the kit has "Linux ZLL Server Service". So is it possible to run the HA Profile instead of the ZLL Profile to connect to the cloud ?

If it is possible, then can you please suggest related links and / or materials. I tried to search through the TI website, but I did not get substantial information regarding the same.

1. I need to check if ZLL RC would act as HA first. But I am pretty sure ZLL light would act as HA first and go to ZLL if it cannot join HA network.

2. You can only choose ZLL or HA, ether one. My suggestion is to use HA network because ZLL will be converge to HA in Zigbee 3.0 spec. You can refer to ZigBee Home Automation Gateway reference design.

One last question though:

There is a CC2650 Multi-radio chip available from TI which supports BLE / ZigBee / 6LoWPAN. So do you suggest that to use as a HA Gateway Device or the previous ZigBee Home Automation Gateway reference design that you replied.

According to my experience, I would suggest you using CC2530 as HA gateway coordinator. CC26xx is more suitable for end devices.

I was going through the Schematic / Block Diagram (tidr695.pdf) mentioned at the http://www.ti.com/tool/CC2531EM-IOT-HOME-GATEWAY-RD website.

Since, the "ZigBee Home Automation Gateway Middleware" is running in Linux User Space, can we use PandaBoard or some other board instead of BeagleBone Black Board ?

How much porting effort will be required ?

Can I interface the CC2530 with the PandaBoard via USB or UART ?

I have one more doubt.

Suppose I pair a Door Lock with a HA Gateway (Coordinator) Device. And then if the HA Gateway Device shuts down for some time and then turns ON. So in this scenario, does it need to pair with the Door Lock Device again or will the Device Database maintained in the User Space of HA Gateway Device take care and bypass the pairing procedure ?

To porting those components to PandaBoard, you have to contact TI Local representative to sign SLA to get source code. I cannot estimate the efforts to do the porting because we do everything by ourselves. However, it should be not difficult to porting it. By the way, if you use CC2530, the interface would be UART. Only CC2531 has USB interface.

If you enable NV_RESTORE on HA coordinator, the network status would be kept. It won't need to pairing again after power recycle.

Hi YK Chen,

For first time pairing / bonding, the ZigBee End Device with the HA Gateway Coordinator, does the End Device needs to be near the HA Gateway device ?

Because I saw a door lock end device video, and there the user was trying to pair the door lock to the HA Gateway Hub for the first time. He mentioned that the door lock needs to be first taken near to the HA Gateway Hub and paired for the first time before installing it on the door which was around 30 feet far from the Hub.

Usually, I would suggest you put device close to GW when doing pairing. This is for better signal strength because there will be lots of communications between GW and device while pairing.

It is not a hard requirement but it also depends on the TX power and RX sensitivity of ZC/ZR/ZED design.
