Ti Zigbee comparison with sub 1 Ghz solutions

I am currently working on Zigbee CC2530 based street lighting solution. Our system is mostly ready and working reliably for 20 lights with 19db gain setting. I have few questions:

- I am a bit concerned about people talking about Zigbee range not being so good etc. Am I making a right choice by selecting Zigbee for street lighting solution? If I plan one gateway per 40-50 lights, will I get enough and reliable data transmission with 10+ hops? I use MTOR currently.

- TI recommends CC2530 + 2591 for smart meters. I wonder is this better than sub 1Ghz? Would Zigbee really work for AMR where I can imagine houses scattered all across the city? Can Zigbee really scale that well? That would partially answer my question above. 

- TI has been talking about Zigbee support for sub 1Ghz. Nothing has come out yet. So TI really believes that Zigbee scales as good for long range applications like street lighting and metering (water or energy)?

  • Outdoor environments are always messy and need you to do some field test to verify it. Since your application is outdoor light, do they arrange in a line or they are deployed like mesh? Anyway, I think 10hops should be not a problem but I suggest you to enable APS ACK to make sure message delivery. As for sub-1 GHz Zigbee,I don't see TI has plan to support it. If you are interested in sub-1G mesh, you can try to run Contiki L6lowPAN on CC1310.
  • Thanks YiKai. That is the whole point. The question really is- when let us say I sign up a contract for 10,000 lights across city, I can not ensure line of sight etc. Hops is the only way for me to extend network. The part that I really wonder is when Ti and Zigbee say Zigbee for AMR, are they claiming that it is possible to lay the wireless sensor network with may be even 19db across the city (or even in one locality for that matter) successfully?

    Or when they use words AMR/SE compliance, they are only targeting home like environment and hidden text is that you have to use sub 1Ghz for neighborhood connectivity.

  • I don't think it is feasible to use a single Zigbee network to cover across the city. If you have to use Zigbee, I suggest you to separate the city into different regions and setup different Zigbee networks for different regions.
