CC2530+CC2591 PER TEST on custom hardware

Hi all,

I want to accomplish per test on my custom hardware which comprises of CC2530 and CC2591. The user guide provides step by step procedure for per test on smartrf05 boards. Is it possible to do the same task in custom hardware as i don't have this smartrf board with me?

  • You can use CC Debugger instead of SmartRF05.

    Can you please tell how can i set per test configurations for receiver and transmitter? Document "CC2530 Software Examples
    User’s Guide" SWRU214A specifies the receiver and transmitter configurations using the button1 press and using joystick. Am i referring to the correct document? I have programmed two of my devices with per_test-srf05_cc2530_91 after that i am stuck how to proceed.
  • I would suggest you to use SmartRF Studio to do PER test.

    I am getting very less range in between zigbee coordinator and end device without using router even if i am using CC2530 module with CC2591 range extender. I don't know what's problem.
    1)As told by you i can use CC debugger for doing the per test. As far as i understood from the user guide i can use two debuggers and set one device to transmit and other to receive packets. This concept we can use for short distance but i want to do long range test as you had told to do per test for 30, 50,100 meter. So how can i do this long range test? On transmitter side i can use battery to power and on receiver side i will use CC debugger to receive the packets and view in smartrf studio and find the packet error test. Can you please suggest how can i accomplish this? What changes do i need to make in the per test example code for transmitter side so that transmitter will be continuously sending data?
    2)What should be the actual range one can get using this combination normally?

  • 1. You will need two notebook to do this. You should connect CC Debugger + CC2530-CC2591 to one notebook to do TX and another does RX. Then, do PER test.
    2. If your CC2530-CC2591 outputs 16 dbm as TX power, you should be able to do TX/RX to 250 meters in line-of-sight test.

    1)I had done line of sight per test for a distance of 20-35 meters. I had selected channel 11 and tested for different transmit power. Finally i got to conclusion that transmit power 16dbm and 14dbm give better result. As i switch to higher communication channel, error rate increases. Here i have included a part of test report. Every time packet error rate was different and different RSSI value was received for the same distance and same transmit power. I want to know if this is ok. Is it possible that using some other external antenna i would be getting more range? I couldn't test for longer distance due to power source unavailabilty. I will check for long distance once i get the source.

    I didn't check the same thing if zigbee network will also be able to communicate up to this distance.

    2)You have mentioned that we can achieve up to 250meter in line of sight. Is this distance achievable without using router in between?

    2. There is no router in between.

    Where do you think there may be problem hardware module or antenna selection?
  • It should not less than -60 in this distance. I suspect this is about your HW design.

    When i was testing with transmit power more than 17 db then loss was much more. I was not able to receive the packets at all when i had set transmit power as 19 and 20db. I have purchased two types of CC2530+CC2591 readymade modules from different vendors in china. I don't have more information if they follow the reference design as specified by ti or not. Initially they specify range would go up to 1km but i am not able to get even 100 meter. I had tried to search for ti modules but there is no availability at mouser,digikey and other vendors.
    Range is of big concern for me as i need to use for industrial application. If possible, If you know can you please tell about any vendor which follow the standards and which you might have tested during your test. I will try to contact them and get it to test.

  • It's obvious that this CC2530-CC2591 module would get saturate when you increase TX power more than 19 dbm. If you use 16 dbm as TX power, what distance can you reach? We made our own module and can have more than 200 meter transmitting without problem. I don't test module from other company so I cannot give you recommendation.
  • Till yet, i have not measured the max range. I will update once i do the test may be tomorrow. Thanks a lot for your suggestions.
