CC2538 ZC Channel Selection

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2531EMK

Hi,

I have question about ZC Channel selection. In our case, for each ZC in zone 1, there will be hundreds of ZEDs to join ZC1. For another ZC in another zone 2 close to zone1, there will be also hundreds of ZEDs to join ZC2. My question is what channels to be selected for 2 ZCs? Can they be same channel but different Pan Id? Our ZEDs are moving from ZC1 to ZC2. That means ZEDs will rescan and switch channel. Choosing different channels are good idea or bad? I did some research it said that switching channel will be disaster for the nodes.

My feeling is that choosing one channel but selecting different Pan Id for different ZCs is good enough for all nodes. However, my co-worker want to pick different channel for different ZC. For example, he picked channel 16 for ZC, and his ZED cannot join his ZC. But if switching back to channel 11, his ZED joined the network right away.

Can somebody tell me why switching channel is disaster for the nodes on the network? I am trying to explain this to my co-work not to choose different channel for nodes but using different Pan Id.

Thx!

  • Do you intend to switch channel after ZC forms network or you want ZC to form Zigbee network on different channel? If there is only ZC/ZED in your system and ZC switch channel, ZED will become orphan and start scan all of channels to rejoin. There is no problem in this case. However, if there is ZR in your system, ZC has to notify all ZRs to change channel and ask them to switch channel at the same time. If there is any ZR doesn't receive switching channel command, it would stay in original channel and cause problem.
  • There is no ZR in our case, just ZC and ZED. ZC will form the network and wont switch. But ZED is moving, ZED will join the 1st ZC and be moving to another ZC later which forms the network using different channel. This ZED will become orphaned and rescan all channels again to join the 2nd ZC. So in our case, only ZED switches channel between two different ZC while moving. Is any benefit to use different channel for different ZCs? How sniffer analyzer captures different channels at the same time?

    Thx!
  • It depends on the traffic of your Zigbee system. If there is not much traffic, I think it should be no problem to have two ZCs in the same channel. You can use two CC2531EMK to sniffer two different channels.
