CC2538 Mesh Generic App Binding issue

Hi,

i am using zstack mesh 1.0.0 and using a custom made CC2538NF23 board, i am using generic app example for testing, I've ZC and ZR nodes, after powering up ZC the network is established and LED3 will turn on, then after powering the ZR it will join the ZC network and LED3 will turn on, but if i press SW2 on both the boards for binding after few seconds ZC's LED4 starts blinking indicating failure to bind, also I've tried match descriptor but this also fails, so what do you think the problem is?

I suggest you to use Ubiqua Packet Analyzer to check this issue.

Hi YiKai,

Thank you for your quick response, currently i don't have a cc2531 usb dongle to use it with Ubiqua Packet Analyser, is there any other way to debug this issue, also i need info about how to connect my board to ztool

Since you are using custom board, using Ubiqua Packet Analyzer is the easiest and clearest way to find out where the problem is. To connect with Ztool, you need to use a USB-to-serial convertor to connect your desktop and C2538 UART TX/RX pins to make it work.

Thank you for your quick response, i am able to connect my board to ztool via uart i'm able to see system and ZDO functionalities, with this will be able to resolve my binding issue and how?

I don't think Ztool can solve your binding issue. Please setup sniffer and provide sniffer log to me so I can help.

Thank you YiKai Chen, currently i don't have cc2531 usb dongle to check, however i tried it with TIMAC's (v1.5.2) sample code for cc2538 as FFD and RFD i was able to establish network and communicate b/w RFD and FFD, so i wanted to know what is difference b/w Mesh's GenericApp and TIMAC's SampleApp.

TIMAC is purely based on 802.15.4 protocol and GenericApp is based on Z-Stack. By the way, how do you judge GenericApp doesn't work on your board?

Like i said after network establishment from ZC the ZR joins the network i.e., indicated by LED3 turning on but binding (when i press SW2 on both ZC and ZR) or match descriptor (when i press SW4 on ZC) is not working.

No i don't the lcd, but if binding is successful the LED4 will turn on, on both ZC and ZR.

I don't remember default GenericApp has this behavior. Do you add these by yourself?

No I've not modified the GenericApp, but in Z-Stack Generic Application User's Guide it is mentioned in that way.

I don't even notice there is such function. I usually read results on LCD and use Ubiqua Packet Analyzer to check what's wrong when it doesn't work.

what is observed on ztool is that ZC on SW4 press able to send Match Descriptor request from ZC to ZR on ZR's ztool it shows Match Desc Req, Rsp Sent but i'm not able to receive the response on ZC, any idea that ZC not receiving ?

Try to set a breakpoint in "case Match_Desc_rsp:" of ZC's GenericApp_ProcessZDOMsgs and see if it hits.

No control does not come inside GenericApp_ProcessZDOMsgs or case Match_Desc_rsp

That's why I ask you to check with Ubiqua Packet Analyzer. Anyway, have you tried to trigger end device binding (SW2) on both ZC and ZR at the same time to see if binding works?

Yes I've tried binding but It doesn't work either however after few seconds LED4 on Zc starts blinking indicating error in binding

In packet 29 of your sniffer log, your device sends end device binding request but your coordinator doesn't so the end device binding doesn't make it. In packet 39, coordinator sends match request and get response from device in packet 42 so I think coordinator should be able to send command to device.

As you said in packet 29 the router sends End device bind request (i.e pressing SW2 on router) but the coordinator does not receives and binding is not started? also coordinator on pressing SW4 sends match descriptor request also it get response from router (confirmed from ztool) but still their is no communication?

1. For end device binding, I have told you that you also have to press SW2 on coordinator to send end device binding. Do you do it?
2. I suggest you to set a breakpoint on "GenericApp_SendTheMessage();" which is in "if ( events & GENERICAPP_SEND_MSG_EVT )" of GenericApp_ProcessEvent on coordinator side to check if the breakpoint is hit.

Also i have the following query
1. If ZE joins ZR and ZR joins the ZC to form the network, will the ZC know the ZE's short address ?
2. Where is the routing table information stored any particular file?
3. If we know the 64bit address of ZE, can we program the ZR to allow the connections from the specific ZE ? Is this recommended ?
4. How many ZE's can a ZR support ?

1. When a device joins Zigbee network, it would broadcast end node announcement with its short address, ZC can register callback to receive it.
2. It's in rtgTable[] defined in nwk_globals.c
3. You can refer to processors.wiki.ti.com/.../Black_list_implementation and do it reversely as white list.
4. It's 20 by default. It's defined by NWK_MAX_DEVICE_LIST in nwk_globals.h

1. Yes i'v pressed SW2 on coordinator as well on router for binding, but there is no bind request is sent from coordinator.
2. Yes the break point hits at GenericApp_SendTheMessage(), this happens even there is no other devices (i.e, ZR/ZE) in the network

I run out of idea why it doesn't work on your CC2538 custom PCB. If you have CC2538DK, I suggest you to test your code on it to make sure it works first.

I followed this link https://e2e.ti.com/support/wireless_connectivity/zigbee_6lowpan_802-15-4_mac/f/158/p/387664/1369549 for generic app auto binding (without ez- mode)ZR binds with ZC i'm able to send message from ZC to ZR but not the other way around, i checked with break point at GenericApp_SendTheMessage() its hitting but i'm not able to receive at ZC. Also i need info about ez-mode.

Try to comment out the following red line in "case ZDO_STATE_CHANGE:" of GenericApp_ProcessEvent

Yes binding is successful which is indicated by LED4 turning on.

I can see the binding success in the sniffer log now. Do you set breakpoint at GenericApp_SendTheMessage and check if it hits now?

Try to add the following red codes to your device's GenericApp and test again to see if device can send out "Hello world" to ZC.

I included the code above, now i'm able to see the message on sniffer however ZC is not able to receive the message, i've put the breakpoint at GenericApp_ProcessEvent() in case AF_INCOMING_MSG_CMD its not hitting also attached sniffer file.

I see no reason why it doesn't hit breakpoint at GenericApp_ProcessEvent() in case AF_INCOMING_MSG_CMD. Do you change endpoint of your coordinator?

Hi Chen,
I now introduced an end device to existing network (contains ZC and ZR), ZE associates with ZR successfully, ZE sends a device announce and binding request and receives response from ZR but LED4 starts blinking indicating failure in binding also checked with breakpoint in GenericApp_ProcessZDOMsgs() in case End_Device_Bind_rsp, i'm attaching the sniffer log.
