Zigbee License

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: Z-STACK, CC2530

Hi!

I am new to ZigBee . I would like to use cc2530 and TI's Z-stack  for my home automation project. Please clarify that do we need to pay the or attain a license from  ZigBee organization  to sell any product based on ZigBee with Z-stack and also do we need to submit our product for testing and certification from agencies like FCC in USA.  Kindly answer the above queries with context to INDIA.

Regards,

Pratiksha

  • Hello Pratiksha,

I hope the following will help:

    1) If you use our Zigbee radios and wish to have the official Zigbee stamp, your product will need certification and you will need to adopt a basic Zigbee Alliance membership.  The Zigbee website has some further information on this.  www.zigbee.org

    2) If you use a module from one of our partners (eg Radiocrafts www.radiocrafts.com or Amber Wireless www.amber-wireless.de) then you do not need the certification.

I would recommend checking the Alliance Site.

    Cheers,
    Lisa

  • Whenever you want to launch a ZigBee based product (i.e. a product using a ZigBee stack) you have to be a member of the ZigBee alliance (at least at adopter level) as you will be using IP of the ZigBee alliance.

When you want to ensure interoperability with other HA compliant devices you need to go for ZigBee HA certification (to one of the test houses mentioned on the zigbee.org).

However, (even when using modules) you will always have to obay FCC, ETSI, ...  RF regulations depending on the country you sell the product. Not sure what the rules are for India, sorry. Most modules are coming with an own list of certificates, so you should check with the module vendors, but keep in mind that changing details of the antenna already require recertification.

    Good luck!
