CC1350: Wireless Mesh network with contiki OS

I am working on a project called sensorhub. In that, sensors needs to communicate with each other in a mesh network and need to send the data to the border router.

I found that contiki os can do the mesh network work.but i didn't know how to get started with it. My question is,

Is there any possibility that cc26xx/cc1350 can be done with cooja simulator ?
If answer to the first question is No. what kind of things I need to follow to make the mesh network work with cc26xx/cc13xx?
Is there any other methods that I can follow to make my project work?

1. Cooja cannot simulate CC26xx/CC13xx

Hi Arivoli,

To get started, you can try out the examples provided in the Contiki Stack

It provides 3 examples,

1) cc26xx-demo : To obtain and print the sensor readings like the temperature, humidity and so on at given intervals.

2) very-sleepy-demo: This example gives you an insight on the use of ContikiMAC duty cycling mechanism for low power applications. You can use this example for nodes that will sleep most of the time without taking part in routing.

3) cc26xx-web-demo: This example demonstrates a way of deploying a very low-consuming, very sleepy node. With use of a border router like 6lbr or the rpl border router you can try to send sensor readings to a web server either using MQTT or COAP.

I'll try to brief the steps required,

You can flash one cc1350 sensortag/launchpad with the slip radio binary

and use the 6LBR in your running Linux machine

then you can flash either cc26xx demo or cc26xx web demo example binary to cc1350 launchpad/sensortag, this way you can setup a mesh network and view your cc1350 sensor readings.

I am having 5 CC1350 boards. I need to make one CC1350 as border router to connect to external network, another 4 needs to get wirelessly connected as mesh network and needs to send their data to the border router. For border router to work, which code I need to refer to and for mesh network connection, which code i need to verify?

You can refer to sunmaysky.blogspot.tw/.../spi-connection-between-launchxl.html which shows you how to connect LAUNCHXL-CC1310 with ENC28J60 as border router and sunmaysky.blogspot.tw/.../contiki-subg-hz-6lowpan-on-cc1350.html shows you how to build cc26xx-web-demo example for LAUNCHXL-CC1350 so you can join them into LAUNCHXL-CC1310 with ENC28J60 running as border router to form 6LowPAN network. However, LAUNCHXL-CC1310 has limited flash/RAM so the border router is 6lbr lite which means it is a lite version of 6lbr and lacks of lots functionality.

The links you have referred is good. In mesh connection - the sensors nearer to the border router are called neighboring nodes and the node which is not in radio environment of border router will deliver their data to the neighbor nodes of border router and from the neighbor node that data will get resulted to the border router. one thing I want to know is that, the link you have referred has only two nodes that is communicating directly to the border router, if one of such node is not a neighbor of border router what will happen? it will work as similar to the above mentioned concept?

The links you have referred is good and helpful. In mesh concept - nodes which are closer to the border router are named as neighbor nodes and it will communicate directly with the border router, the nodes away from the radio environment of border router will send their data to the neighbor nodes and from neighbor nodes to the border router. The link have an image that is showing two nodes directly communicating with border router. I want to know that, if one of the nodes is not a neighbor, whether it will communicate with the border router through neighbor node or not?

As I know, it should be. However, the latest Contiki source code has problem to support this on CC13xx. You might need to sync to older version or wait Contiki developer to fix it.

This really depends on how you're configuring the node as either MESH node or LEAF node. In MESH mode it does the routing for other nodes to reach the border router & in the LEAF mode it does not take part in routing.

Ashok Sundar Do you test on latest CC26xx-web-demo? I think it enable router mode by default. I had used it to test CC13xx mesh but it doesn’t work.

Hi Yikai,

Yes I've tested that example on the latest source code of Contiki and Mesh was working fine. Except Very sleepy demo example the rest of the projects are configured to be in the Mesh mode unless you set the flag RPL_CONF_LEAF_ONLY in any of the configuration files.

Can you confirm whether all the nodes are on the same RF_CORE_CONF_CHANNEL?

Yes, I can see device on 6lbr sensor page so it is on correct channel. Can you specify which Contiki commit version you test this so I can verify it later?

It should connect to a router node under radio coverage.

Hi, I have the same problem. Only nodes that are in range of 6lbrouter are visible. If one is in range 6lbrouter and the other is not, the other one can not change the parent though it is within range of the one.
