CC2530: Is it possible for RF to operate without Crystal in CC2530

Hi,

I am in a project of CC2530. And I hope my product is low-cost as possible.

And I know CC2530 has RC oscillator, inside. But I am not sure it operate without Crystal in RF.

My question is "Is it possible for RF to operate without Crystal in CC2530?"

It should be fine to use internal 32K RC oscillator.

Just be sure to define OSC32K_CRYSTAL_INSTALLED = FALSE to accordingly set OSC_32KHz false so that the internal 32 KHz RC oscillator is used.

Some misinformation here.

According to the datasheet, item 4.4 Oscillators and Clock:

"Note that operation of the RF transceiver requires that the 32-MHz crystal oscillator is used."

Also in the item 23.14.3:

The CSP runs at the set system clock frequency, which must be set to 32 MHz for correct radio operation.

Since there is no internal 32 MHz clock, you will need to use an external crystal to properly operate the RF.

Good point Alessandro, I had assumed we were only talking about the 32-kHz options. A 32 MHz external crystal is required for RF.

So, You mean a 32kHz crystal oscillator is not required. But, if RF operate, we need a 32 MHz external crystal, right?

Yes, that’s correct. You can use internal 32K RC oscillator but 32M external crystal is mandatory.

CC2530 has a primary clock source that can be 16MHz Internal Oscillator or 32MHz external crystal.

The secondary clock can be 32.753kHz internal oscilator or 32.768kHz external crystal.

The secondary clock is normally used with sleeptimer register that can be used as a timer or a timed wake-up interrupt.

If you need time accuracy in your project you should use a 32.768kHz external crystal for the secondary clock, otherwise you can use the 32.753kHz internal oscillator.

If you need the RF communication you should use a 32MHz external crystal. If you don't need RF, you can use the 16MHz internal oscillator.

If RF is not needed, you should probably look for another uController since you can find cheaper parts without the RF.

Answering your question: Yes. 32kHz external crystal is not required but 32MHz external crystal is mandatory for using the RF.
