CC1352P: Using 0402 size components for RF circuitry..

Part Number: CC1352P

Hi Team CC,

Our CC1352P LaunchPad reference designs use 0201 size components for the RF section (between CC1352P and Skyworks switch and antenna).

Is is OK to use 0402 size components in this section?

Do we have a recommend for 0402 size component values for RF matching between CC1352P and Skyworks switch and antenna?

What about any associated layout changes that may be required?

Thanks, Merril

  • Hi Merril,

Using 0201 makes it easier to do the layout well, but it is possible to use 0402 instead. For layout guidance you can look at the CC1352R- or the CC1352P-4 LaunchPads.

Note that there general availability problem for "larger" passives. The component manufacturers are pushing for smaller sizes and are also obsoleting several components over the coming years.

    Fredrik
  • Hi Merril,

The largest suppliers of passive components are not investing in 0402 and greater sizes no more which is causing greater lead times and higher prices. Currently, there is a huge lead time on larger passive components such as 0402 and larger sizes. Moving to 0201 will help to reduce the lead time. In addition to improved lead times, there are other major benefits moving to 0201:

    • more compact RF layout
    • tighter tolerances available
    • less unwanted emissions due to more compact RF
    • 0201 components are cheaper than 0402 components

0201 has been available for nearly two decades and is now the most common size for industry according to the largest passive suppliers. There are no plans to use smaller passive sizes than 0201 in our reference designs such as 01005 and smaller.
