CC2538: How to use CC2538-CC2592 EMK as Contiki Sniffer with Smart RF06?

Part Number: CC2538
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2650EMK, CC2592, , CC2650, CC2650STK

Hi All

Is there the possibility to use the  CC2538-CC2592 EMK as a Contiki Sniffer with the Smart RF06 as it says in these links but with the cc2538EMK https://github.com/g-oikonomou/sensniff  and http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Contiki_sniffer ? or theres another way to do it ?

Also I have the Question, for the CC2538EMK and CC2650EMK SMA antenna, if add the connector, I could use it to extend the range of my sniffer? or it is just for RF Testing?.

Thank you for your answers

RH

  • Yes, it’s possible to use CC2538-CC2592 EMK as a Contiki and the links you listed are correct references.

If you use SMA connector for external antenna, you can get better performance.

However, sniffer is just a receiver and I won’t expect too much difference even you use CC2592 and external antenna.
  • Hi Thanks for clearing me that doubt!

So In general I Can use CC2538-CC2592 EMK as I would be using CC2538 with Smart Rf06 listed like the links explains right, with the same steps as cc2538.
The Idea to have SMA Connector for external antenna is that CC2650EMK and CC2538EMK have both PCB antenna, so the coverage range is less than with the SMA antenna, rigth?
But my doubt was that in datasheet says that connector is for RF testing, so I wasnt sure that it would work correctly to transmit or receive packet.
  • Yes, the range will be less using PCB antenna. The SMA can be for testing or general usage without problem.
  • Hi YK chen !

Have another question but now for the cc2650 sensortag, Do you know if i can add an antenna in external uSMA connector to expand my coverage range, or I have to do some adjustments to make it work?
  • I am not sure which CC2650STK HW rev you use. According to latest schematic I can get from TI web, you have to remove ANT5 and mount ANT7 to use uSMA.
  • Could you share the lastest rev, I checked the Rev C, I didnt see Ant7, Anyway, do Ihave to disconnect Ant5 to use J1 Ms-156HF connector, without problem?

  • ANT7 was possibly a typo as Rev C is the latest, but yes you must disconnect ANT5 for use of J1.
