CC2531: How many ZigBee nodes, do ZigBee dongle will detect.

Consider I have 1000+ ZigBee nodes in my lab & one ZigBee sniffer dongle is attached to my PC.

Do single ZigBee sniffer dongle is capable of detecting 1000+ device at the same instance & record the data packets from those nodes.

Hi,

The sniffer is used in conjunction with a sniffer program (eg. Ubiqua, Wireshark, etc). The sniffer passes Zigbee frames for the sniffer program to process. Theoretically, any number of nodes/frames can be sniffed.

Since Zigbee is a mesh network and can span larger distances, you'll need to ensure that all nodes are within radio range of the sniffer. However, this in turn is not practical, since this would be limiting the distances possible with a mesh network; for geographically large networks, consider using multiple sniffers.

Yes, in laboratory we have 1000+ ZigBee nodes within same range. So I believe, dongle will detect all the available nodes as per your reply.

And also would like to understand, for any extended distance, would any antenna be recommended to get attached to dongle ? If so, please suggest some reference models.

I'm unaware of any antenna attachments for the CC2531 USB dongle. Please consider using CC13x2/CC26x2 launchpads which have higher RX sensitivity.

How large is your lab? We can use one CC2531 to cover 80m x 40m area without problem for your reference.
