CC2530: Method to read real-time energy consumption

Hi guys,

I am new in cc2530. I want to measure the real-time energy consumption of cc2530 when changing its transmission speed or mode.

I have read the following link but I wonder is it possible to read the real-time voltage and current simply using ADC or other operations?

I think you can use ADC to read voltage but not current so I don't think it's feasible to achive your goal.

To measure a chips current consumption accurately you need something externally to do the measurements. One of the challenges for measurements like this is the dynamic range. You can use an ADC to measure the voltage over a 10 ohm resistor when the current consumption is close to constant but normally you would like to measure currents in the range from < 1 uA to ~30 mA which require a high dynamic range with good resolution. Then you end up with a circuit we have in the energy trace part of www.ti.com/.../LAUNCHXL-CC1352R1 and still this circuit has some limitation in the lower end. Hence using a good scope as in the app note you linked to is a good solution or even better, a DC power analyzer as described in www.ti.com/.../swra478d.pdf

Thank you. Then do you have any idea how to detect the battery condition? That would also do even I cannot read the current value.

We usually use ADC to check battery voltage for this.
