CC2520: Power consumption doesn't change while the TXPOWER register changed

Part Number: CC2520

Hi e2e,

Our customer is using CC2520 in their project, and they found a issue that CC2520 Power consumption doesn't change while the TXPOWER register changed, for example.

in below picture, customer use 0xF7 for 5dbm output power, the current of their board is about 40mA, and they also see the RF output power meet 5dbm in spectrum analyzer.

after changing to 0x2C for -7dbm output power, the current of their board is also 40mA, and they also see the RF output power meet -7dbm in spectrum analyzer,.

it's very confused that why the power consumption doesn't change in different RF output power, does there have any thing to take care while changing the output power? need your help on that.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Lei,

Does the customer have any other circuitry on the PCB? Are they sure the CC2520 is consuming all the current? Do they see the same on multiple boards?

    Regards,
    Fredrik

  • Hi,

we do the test in the same testing environment, we only change the CC2520 power setting, there is no  consuming changing. The result is not match with the parameter in the datasheet.

we test several boards, it is the same.

  • Hi Fredrik,

Yes, there has other circuit, but it seems that the total power consumption doesn't change while the transmitting RF power setup changing, do you have any suggestion to have a further check on that?

    thanks.

    LEON

  • Hi Leon,

If they actually see that the output power is reduced, I do not understand why the current consumption is not going down either, that does not make sense. I would recommend that they carefully debug their measurement setup as well as the board to be sure they are measuring correctly and have full control on what exactly on their board is consuming current.

    Regards,
    Fredrik
