CC2530: Chip does not receive/send signals. -3dBm constant signal input.

Part Number: CC2530
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2531

Hey everybody,

I build a circuit with the CC2530, the Johanson Technology 2450BM15A0002E as BAUD and connected all the necessary components (see below).

The schematic:

-          C16,C17 = 27pF
-          C18 = 220pF
-          C19-C23 = 100nF
-          C24,C25 = 1uF
-          C26 = 1pF
-          R18 = 56k Ohm
-          R19 = 0 Ohm

The PCB:

(C20 was resoldered properly after I took the photo)

Connecting the chip via debugger now works fine, but it fails to receive or send Zigbee Packages. For reference I also tried my CC2531-USB Stick, which works just fine.

Connected to the TI SmartRF Studio 7, the “continuous RX”-RSSI-graph of the CC2530 sits at roundabout -3dBm constantly, the CCA and LOCK_STATUS indicators are both off all the time. The CC2531 sits at -105dBm when not receiving packages and the indicators are both on.

My design is based on the reference designs provided by Texas Instruments. I checked the designs multiple times now but cannot find a part which is different/could cause this problem. The only part different is the C26 Cap, which has a value of 1pF instead of .5pF. However, in the datasheet of the BAUD, the blocking Cap is not required. Therefore, I removed the C26 Cap, but no difference.

Did I miss a component, or did a layout mistake?

Cheers,
Dieter

  • Hi,

It seems you connected C16 & C17 to the Wrong Ports (Gnd Pads) of the Crystal or Crystal connection to the chip is wrong. Your Crystal may not be oscillating. Please check the Crystal connection and also test the Crystal oscillator.

Also please clean the board well with Flux remover. It seems you soldered Manually. Make sure No dry soldering joints.

    Thanks,

    PM
