LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1: TI Packet Sniffer 2: Error Sending Message, Message Response Timeout

Part Number: LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: FLASH-PROGRAMMER, UNIFLASH, CC2652R, PACKET-SNIFFER,

I'm trying to set up a packet sniffer as described here, but when I click Start in step 3, I am greeted with the attached error. How might I fix this? I tried clearing flash, resetting my computer, etc. but nothing seems to work. Wireshark is set up correctly.

  • Hi Sean,

I haven't seen this type of error message before.  Make sure you've erased all flash memory before programming C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments \SmartRF Tools\SmartRF Packet Sniffer 2\sniffer_fw\bin\{your_device} into your CC2652R device with UNIFLASH or FLASH-PROGRAMMER.  Furthermore, ensure all LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1 XDS110 jumper pins are connected, that the LP is not controlled by any other software accessing the UART port, and consider re-installing PACKET-SNIFFER.  What OS version does your system use?  SmartRF Sniffer Agent runs on Windows 7 and Windows 10.

    Regards,
    Ryan

  • Hi Ryan,

I was clearing the flash before loading the file onto the device. All jumper pins are connected, except for TD0, TD1, and SW0, which were unconnected out of the box. The OS is Windows 10. I'll try reinstalling it.

    Thanks,
    Sean

  • I reinstalled the sniffer, but the issue is persisting. Might there be something I forgot to configure?

  • The steps in the guide you've linked should be sufficient.  Does the Sniffer Agent point to the correct COM Port and are you running the program as administrator?  Do you have any other computers available to test with?  Make sure that you only have one device connected for the time being.  Are you able to operate other firmware resources using this LaunchPad?

    Regards,
    Ryan

  • Hi Ryan,

The COM port appears to be correct. I tried running the program as an administrator and also with another LaunchPad that I was using to run code earlier, but I saw the same error. I don't seem to have access to another computer at the moment.

    Thanks,

    Sean

  • If you've tested with multiple LaunchPads then this is probably not the issue as compared to the Sniffer Agent or computer/OS.

    Ryan

  • I was able to try it on another laptop and I had the same issue. I made sure to follow the steps on that page precisely...

    Best,

    Sean

  • I just confirmed the setup on my system without any issue, using a Windows 10 64-bit OS, Smart RF Sniffer Agent v1.8.0, and an out-of-box LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1 Rev B with CC2652R Rev E silicon.  I cannot think of any further advice to provide.

    Regards,
    Ryan
