IVA on am3517

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM3517

Simple question: does the am3517 have IVA?

  • Hello Tapani,

No, there is no DSP on AM35x devices.

  • TMS320C64x

I am already aware that it does not have a TMS320C64x/D64 DSP.

Or is IVA the same as the DSP?

Reason I am asking is that the TI (PSP *.*.*.07) linux kernel detects the presence of the IVA extension on am3517 (by reading bit 12(?) in the status word @0x4800244c). However the kernel goes on and does not load the necessary iva hwmods, causing all kinds of error messages and scary looking stack dumps etc (this happens to some extent also on the am3517evm board and TI kernel).

  • IVA is the same thing as the DSP.  It stands for "Imaging, Video, and Audio"  It an accelerator based on DSP core.  This is not included in the AM35x.  Bit 12 of the Control Device Status Register (0x4800244C) is reserved per the AM35x TRM.

If you use the AMSDK for the AM35x you should not see these errors.

  • Thank you Jeff, that answered my question.

It appears then that kernel CPU feature detection is incorrect. Forcing a failed IVA detection gets rid of all error messages. (And FYI: the error messages are there even on a TI provided am3517EVM board with TI software, so I don't think using the amsdk will help).
