Kernel boot issue on DM814x EVM

Hello,

I'm using EZSDK DM814x 5.02.02.60 and DM814x EVM with 512MB memory.

I modified the memory map as given in http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/EZSDK_Memory_Map#Changing_Memory_Map_For_512MB_Board wiki page.

Bootargs I'm using is: console=ttyO0,115200n8 rootwait rw mem=176M earlyprintk notifyk.vpssm3_sva=0x9F900000 vram=50M ti814xfb.vram=0:16M,1:16M,2:6M root=/dev/

    FATAL: Module syslink not found.

    I see this error in the boot log. Is the filesystem correctly setup? On the EZSDK filesystem, syslink should be under /lib/modules

    syslink module is present at "/lib/modules/2.6.37/kernel/drivers/dsp/" location in filesystem. So modprobe should find this module. Any idea why modprobe can't find syslink? I checked /etc/modprobe.conf and /etc/modprobe.d files, but all configurations looks okay.

    Anyway, I replaced "modprobe syslink" with "insmod /lib/modules/2.6.37/kernel/drivers/dsp/syslink.ko". So now the kernel boot is working fine.

  • I've had similiar modprobe problems with minix and ipv6. I had to run "depmod -a" on the target. Of course to do that, the target has to boot up to the console login. Init scripts that fail on modprobe will prvent getting that far. Never did figure out how to do a "depmod -a" while the target filesystem is mounted on the host.

     

  • Thanks Norman. "dempod -a" worked for me.

    I removed those startup scripts to boot the kernel & once kernel is up I ran "depmode -a". This updated modules.dep file on my file-system. So after this modprobe works & kernel boots properly with all scripts restored.

  • I've been running into the same exact problems described here (and a few other threads) with the EZSDK 5.03.01.15.

    I simply tried to rebuild the kernel with inotify support, and then wound up with the error about an invalid syslink.ko.  At that point, attempting to run 'make linux_install syslink syslink_install' from the top level EZSDK directory resulted in a bunch of broken moddep files, and an error about the syslink kernel module not being found.

    Has anyone figured out a procedure by which you can update the kernel and rootfs without ever needing to boot the target and run depmod? While this does seem to work, I'd prefer something that I could use when preparing rootfs images for mass programming.

    He uses the Arago toolchain. Don't know it the same tool is available with the CodeSourcery toolchain. I should probably switch as CodeSourcery is now owned by Mentor and they data-mine you to download the free version. Maybe on the next project.

    a simple "depmod -b /path/to/your/targetfs 2.6.37 -v" does it.

  • /sbin/depmod -b /path/to/your/targetfs/ -v 2.6.37

    did it for me - but it is frustrating to see what TI is offering here as official SDK at all. If you are going to rebuild linux (make linux and make linux_install) you are running into those troubles as even make cmem / make cmem_install and make syslink / make syslink_instal won't update the targetfs module dependencies. TI could have fixed this by just inserting a depmod -a as early as possible in their startup scripts...or even by integrating the above command in their make install?

  • There is a "depmod -ae" in TI's udev script - but it only runs when modules.dep is missing.  So another half-baked manual fix is to delete the modules.dep in the targetfs area during installation, and letting the udev start script regenerate the modules.dep on the next reboot.

    Of course, depmod complains because -e needs -E or -F - but it still runs.

  • My solution was to rebuild everything step-by-step according to the DM816x EZ Software Developers Guide:

    source $EZSDK/linux-devkit/environment-setup

    cd $EZSDK

    make clean

    make components

    make all

    make install

    Then modify the kernel:

    cd board-support/linux-2.6.37-psp04.04.00.01/

    make CROSS_COMPILE=arm-none-linux-gnueabi- ARCH=arm ti8168_evm_defconfig

    make CROSS_COMPILE=arm-none-linux-gnueabi- ARCH=arm menuconfig

    make CROSS_COMPILE=arm-none-linux-gnueabi- ARCH=arm uImage

    REMAKE the module

    make CROSS_COMPILE=arm-none-linux-gnueabi- ARCH=arm modules

    sudo cp -r ${HOME}/targetfs/home/root/dm816x-evm/lib/modules ${HOME}/targetfs/lib

    etc...
