DM8168 VIP capture without external decoder (OpenMAX)?

Hi all,

we have a custom DM8168 board with FPGAs as video sources on VIP0 and VIP1.

What steps are required to enable the capture ports in this configuration, using OpenMAX?  I've written an application for the EVM prior to this board, enabling the TVP7002 to decode incoming video for us but want to use FPGAs as direct inputs instead.

Just using VFCC doesn't seem enough as no frames are being detected (debug prints in loggerSM).

Any ideas would be appreciated.

    You should be able to make your FPGA output a digital stream in the exact same format as the TVP7002 configuration you have used in the past. In this case all you should need to do is remove the TVP7002 specific configuration code from the drive and the DSP should not even know the difference.

    no luck. Nothing is being detected at all. I'm using LoggerSMDump and it doesn't see any incoming frames.

    Unfortunately, I cannot mimic the EVM setup exactly as I need to use 8-bit VIP1 instead of 16-bit VIP0 due to a hardware limitation on our current board. A new board will arrive mid December where VIP0 - 16bit should be available.

     

    Reading some other threads, it sounds like this should work though but would require creating a dummy/pass through decoder.

    If you are not able to mimic the TVP7002 (i.e. an ITU1120 format) then yes, you will need to make changes to the configuration.

    additionally, I am not sure a 'dummy' decoder is necessary. As far as I know capture and display are separate entities hence can be configured as such.

    I will ask someone who is more familiar with the driver to try and help you.

    Just to clarify though, can you please say exactly what you are trying to achieve? e.g. 8 bit input in 422 format, 1024x768 image size, discrete syncs capture into a frame buffer for subsequent image processing.

    we are pretty flexible in terms of the color space. Our main input will be a 1080p60 (1920x1080@60fps) connected via FPGA to VIN0. We have the entire 24bit bus connected so ideally 24bit RGB or 20bit YCbCr (embedded syncs), depending on color spaces supported by the DM8168 and its underlying software (OpenMAX).

    The secondary input port (VIN1) will do 1080p60, but only 16bit YCbCr as dictated by the DM8168.

    The 816x supports capture of 2x8/16/24 bit on one port and 2x8/16 bit on the other port. The 24 bit port can capture in RGB or YUV and in 422 or 444 formats, so the choice is yours really.

    What is your current connectivity and we can work on matching the software to what you currently have.

    we haven't really selected input format but I believe there are some software limitations that will impact our choice (on the OpenMAX side). Not really a worry at this point.

    Short term (e.g. right now), I'd like to connect a 480p@60 8-bit YUV to the secondary input port. This is just to demonstrate capture capability. In about two weeks, I"ll have a new board, which includes full 24bit access to the primary input port. Color format doesn't really matter as the FPGA can produce the various format combinations, but the FPGA's internal format is 24bit RGB so ideally, we keep it the same.

    I've attached a package list of our custom Arago distro so you know the versions of all TI components. I've based everything on the EZSDK 5.02

      I have the same problem, I have a custom DM8168 board with FPGA.

      DM8168 get video source from FPGA.

      

      But before that when the custom board booting up I got some errors about VPSS

    no didn't have that problem. Our problem was related to the video input not being detected.

    What version of everything are you using? Based of the EZSDK or are you compiling/building things on your own. It could be related to the address of the shared buffers for notify...

    Post your logfile (dmesg), commandline args, and all the various versions you use.

    thanks for your help. We managed to get the video input to work fine our new motherboard.

    YCbCr 16bit, embedded syncs, 1080p60. We had to play around a little with the clocking but things are working solidly at the moment.

    I found there is an error
