DM8168 Maximum operating Junction Temperature queries...

Dear Team

We are using DM8168 processor with the heat sink in our design which will be going under Thermal Cycling from -10C to +60C in operating condition (ON condition). So we are concerned about the operating temperature of the processor. As per datasheet maximum operating junction temperature is 105C,

  1. There is no on-die temperature sensor in the processor, How do we know the actual junction temperature ?
  2. Is there any Thermal shutdown feature supported if the processor reaches the maximum operating junction temperature ?
  3. What are the disadvantage of operating the processor at 105C ?
  4. What if we operate the processor at 105C for very short period of time. Say 30mins to 1hour ?
  5. How long we can operate the processor at this temperature ?

Waiting for your reply

  • Hello,

I can not answer  all your questions since I am not expert on this.

But if  the maximum junction temperatures are reached then the device will become unstable or could be damaged.

I will try to involve someone to answer your questions.

  • 1) You need to perform thermal simulations and/or measurements of the package then use the equations in the datasheet to calculate/estimate the junction temperature.

    2) There is no automatic thermal shutdown.

    3) The device will become unstable and may be damaged.

    4) 30 minutes is not a short period of time. You should not operate at elevated temperatures for any period of time.

    5) Don't.

I suggest that if you are unable to ensure good, cool air flow over the device with a heat sink then you need to perform system level thermal simulations so that you can design the heat sink and cooling air flow su that the max temperature is not exceeded.
