McASP vs McBSP

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM3517, WL1271, AM3874

We currently have the AM3517 evaluation module which uses the WL1271 with the Bluetooth PCM connected to the McBSP port.  There is a lot of discussion about the McBSP...probably because everyone is using this reference design.

However, we are planning to use the new AM3874 which has only 1 McBSP port.  I am trying to make a board with two modular connectors for bluetooth or other audio applications (that can be used simulataneously).  Is it possible to do the same thing (PCM / AC97) using the McASP port?

More importantly, what are the key differences between McASP and McBSP?  Is it just the built-in buffering on the McBSP?  I can't find a clear comparison on the two modules.

  • David,

This is just for your information. I am not able to answer the question -difference b/w McBSP 7 McASP. However, we have successfully used McBSP port on AM/DM3715 evm and McASP port on DM814x platform (2.6.37 kernel) with the WL1271 PCM interface on the Linux. I think the corresponding drivers will take care of the pcm/tdm part.

  • Good info from Sinoj. David, not sure if I cn provide the specifics you're looking for - But if you haven't yet, you may find a decent comparison by referring to the corresponding McASP/McBSP reference guides:

    McASP

    McBSP

Additionally, here are two wikis that may be of interest: AM McBSP, McASP techniques.
