TPS65987D: Cannot negotiate with Samsung travel adapter (EP-TA845)

Part Number: TPS65987D

Hi, everyone,

Now we noticed this problem, when we use "Samsung Travel adapter (EP-TA845)."

Its PDOs are:
5V==3A
9V==3A
15V==3A
20V==2.25A
(PPS) 3.3-11.0V==4.05A
(PPS) 3.3-16.0V==2.8A
(PPS) 3.3-21.0V==2.1A

As our products (PCs) are designed so that they don't support PPS,
when we attached its adapter,
TPS65987DDH should request 20V==2.25A (i.e. ask for max).

But when Samsung adaptor send SouceCap, TPS65987DDH do soft reset...

Why is it ?

We'll attach PD analyzer data caption
and send data to your colleague Yone-san.

And our base FW ver. is F707.10.05 & F707.10.06.

Best Regards,

  • Hi, everyone,

    Sorry, I forgot to attach caption.

    Best Regards,

  • Hi Maurice,

    I am checking with the team on this issue. Are you able to reproduce the behavior on the TPS65988EVM?

    Thank you,
    Eric

  • Hi, Eric-san,

    Thank you for your reply.

    Yes, of course we've reproduced this behavior by TPS65987DDH.

    PD analyzer log is same as I've attached before.

    Best Regards,

  • Hi Maurice-san,

    Please download the latest version of the GUI from TI.com, we have fixed this bug in the latest release.

    http://www.ti.com/tool/TPS6598X-CONFIG

    Thank you,
    Eric

  • Hi, Eric-san,

    Thank you for your reply.

    We confirmed that latest base FW F707.10.38 is improved about this behavior.

    But

    (1) Which "Summary of Bug Fixes" indicate this countermeasure ?
    (2) What kind of PD chargers cannot negotiate ?
      For example,
     - There're 7 or more PDOs.
     - There're 3 or more PPS PDOs.

    Please tell me about these 2 questions.

    Because our products using TPS65987DDH (base FW is F707.10.05 or F707.10.06) are gone on the market,
    so we have to know what kind of chargers we cannot adopt in our product.

    Best Regards,

  • Hi Maurice-san,

    With FW version F707.10.06 and older, the TPS65987D can not support PPS adapters that have more than one PPS PDO. If there is only one PPS PDO, then there is no issue.

    Additionally, this behavior is resolved in the latest FW version F707.10.08. I would recommend using the latest FW.

    Thank you,
    Eric

  • Hi, Eric-san,

    Thank you for your reply.

    >With FW version F707.10.06 and older, the TPS65987D can not support PPS adapters that have more than one PPS PDO.

    >If there is only one PPS PDO, then there is no issue.

    Maybe 3 or more PPS is unavailable in base FW F707.10.06 or F707.10.05.

    (2 PPS PDOs is okay.)

    Is my understanding right?

    Because by using base FW F707.10.06 or F707.10.05,
    we cannot negotiate with these 2 USB-C chargers with 2 PPS PDOs.

    For example,

    - Goppa ATREG27W_03
    5V==3A / 9V==3A / (PPS) 3.3V-5.9V==3A / (PPS) 3.3V-11V==3A

    - SEKC  SWC-PD3230WT
    5V==3A / 9V==3A / 12V==2.5A / 15V==2A /
    (PPS) 3V-5.9V==3A / (PPS) 3V-11V==3A

    I'll attach the PD analyzer data when we attach Goppa ATREG27W_03 to TPS65987EVM (of course, base FW is F707.10.06)

    Best Regards,

  • Hi Maurice-san,

    2 PPS PDOs is not okay for the old FW versions, only 1 PPS PDO is ok for those versions.

    several PPS PDOs are supported on the latest FW version.

    Thank you,
    Eric

  • Hi, Eric-san,

    Thank you for reply.

    Noted.
