Is there a difference between these two programmer/debuggers that I have on my desk or was there just a nomenclature change at some point?

No they are different production of the same basic design. There are minor differences between the two. (; For example, the labels are different ;)

Strange... I have two MSP430 USB-Debug-Interfaces on my workplace, one labeled with MSP-FET430UIF (V1.4a), the second MSP-FETU430IF (V1.4a). I just opened the housing of both devices and found two times a PCB named MSP-FETU430IF... So the only difference for me is the labeling on top of the case, electrical are both the same.
