Which is the best method to be followed:

Hi Manikandan,

To confirm, you are looking for a device that has a Vrwm of 28V but clamps to 6V? Are you able to provide a part number for my reference so I can ensure what is needing protection?

The best method as discussed in another thread would be to place the TVS before the Schottky diode.

I will be happy to provide a device for the TVS diode once I receive the clarification on the protection requirements, but TI does not manufacture Schottky diodes so I will be unable to provide a device.

Thanks for your reply and sorry for the TYPO. Power module voltage Range is -1V to 36V. So VC shall be 36V.

If I keep the TVS diode before the schottky diode, TVS diode may go bad due to heat dissipation. Do I have to use bidirectional schottky diode to overcome this

Hi Manikandan,

Understood, I believe TVS2700 will be the best choice for this application. The Vrwm is 27V, but the minimum breakdown is above 28V so there should be no issue. It also clamps a little below 36V which will protect the system.

What are the temperatures this device will be subjected to? Looking at the temperature performance this device does not vary much across temperature (see below).

Operating Temperature is 55C.

If I use uni-directional TVS Diode first, it may go bad due to heat dissipation in reverse polarity case. So, I have to place two diodes in opposite orientation in series. Is this correct?

Hi Manikandan,

If there is a threat of reverse polarity case, you can use TVS2701, which is Bi-directional and has very similar specifications to the TVS2700.

Thanks for sharing this part. I have one more doubt in choosing the schottky diode. Schottky diode reverse bias shall be greater than -36V right?
