In this month’s post on our companion blog, the “Precision Hub” on Planet Analog, I share an idea I had about EMI and lightning.

After watching a storm, I started thinking about the EMI challenges we encounter with precision systems. I wondered if I could use EMI to my advantage to detect lightning during a thunderstorm. So, I built a lightning detector to see what would happen.

Check out my full post, “Learning about EMI from my DIY lightning detector,” on Planet Analog to learn more about my experience with EMI and lightning.

And if you need the EMI rejection ratio (EMIRR) for your design, be sure look in the datasheets for our new amplifiers. We’re also providing reports for many amplifiers developed before we made this change. When they’re available, the reports appear on the product page below the datasheet and have “EMI Immunity Performance” in the title.

If the amplifier you’re considering for your design hasn’t been characterized, visit our Precision Amplifiers forum and ask us to characterize it for you! Here’s a curve I took for a customer who asked for help

  • Thanks for your comment John. Since my main goal for this article was to introduce the topic of op amp EMI rejection ratio (EMI-RR) to readers that may be unfamiliar with it, buying an off the shelf AM radio would not have helped achieve this. My second goal was to trigger my SLR camera on lightning activity in approaching thunderstorms I didn't need direction information because I could see the storm, I only needed timing information which this setup provided.
