For specifically laser drivers/modulators, we have reference designs for very low frequencies intended to drive LEDs, and we have a very high frequency reference design for optical network communication which would be overkill for this application…

You might also take a look at this TI Design of paralleling the THS3491,
And yes, normally you would want to get the slug into a plane that perhaps goes through the board to heat sinks onthe back of the board. Deadbugging them up will impair AC response…
