OPA453: FLAG (pin 7) and exposed pad

Part Number: OPA453

Hi Experts,

May I ask for help? Our customer would like to confirm below for OPA453FA :

" first: what to do with the FLAG (pin 7) when not using it? can it be left floating or do i need to connect it some how?
btw. i miss the section in the datasheet that is usually there: pin description. this could be feedback to the creators of the datasheet
there is a way to use the flag pin with a resistor to GND to detect over temp / current ... but i do not need this. so i do not know if i need to put a resistor to GND any way or just leave it floating

second. is the exposed pad of the SMD version somehow connected internaly / do i need to connect it externaly?
i just measured the Exposed Pad: it is internaly connected to the negative supply input."

We hope to received your advise and confirmation. Thank you so much in advance.

Kind regards,
Gerald

  • Hello Gerald,

    Regarding your OPA453 questions:

" first: what to do with the FLAG (pin 7) when not using it? can it be left floating or do i need to connect it some how?

Figure 1 in the datasheet Applications Information indicates that the FLAG resistor connected to ground is "Optional."  Certainly, a resistor can be included as seen in Figure 2 if the thermal shutdown indicator function is needed.

second. is the exposed pad of the SMD version somehow connected internaly / do i need to connect it externaly?
i just measured the Exposed Pad: it is internaly connected to the negative supply input."

The datasheet on Pg. 1 has a not "NOTE: Tabs are electrically connected to V– supply." We recommend that theTO-220 tab be connected to a PC board plane that has V- applied to it. Doing so provides a low resistance V- connection for the OPA453 internal die's substrate.
