OPA209: ABS max consideration

Part Number: OPA209

Hello Support team,

My customer inquires how to consider the abs max. They found that voltage might apply to signal input pin before V+\V- power up, in other word V+=V-=0V.  Even if signal input pin has out of abs max range, if the current on input pin is within 10mA, can OPA209 accept this usage without damage? Is their understanding correct?

Thanks,

Koji Ikeda

  • Hello Ikeda-san,

We don't test or characterize the OPA209 with voltage applied to the inputs before V+ and V- are applied so TI can't make any specific assurances about the op amp's specific ability to tolerate such conditions.

What occurs under such conditions is one or the other input ESD protection diode will become forward biased, biasing the supply rails to the applied input voltage less a diode voltage drop. The key is to keep the signal input pin current to 10 mA maximum, and preferably less.

If the Op amp is applied as an inverting amplifier the series input resistor limits the input current to less than 10 mA for many circuits. Alternately, a series resistor can be added to the non-inverting input to limit current, but at the expense of some added resistor thermal noise.
