THS3217: Single Supply

Hi Team,

According to the datasheet the THS3217 can be operated from a single-sided 8V (or higher) supply, however all the datasheet specifications are for a split +/-6V supply. What sort of performance degradation might we expect if we operate it from single-sided 8V or 12V supply? Do you have performance data from a single supply for the THS3217?

Well you do have to bias all the I/O nodes up carefully to midsupply for instance - that on chip reference buffer amp is for that purpose.pretty full example design in Figure 103. Going from 12V total supply down to 8V will slow all the stages down slightly. Also, watch out of excessive output current if you have DC couple to ground loads.

Hi Mitchell,

Good points to consider here, the relevant section of the users guide is on page 5, Section 2.3 "Midscale or Reference Buffer". I'll reiterate the output common mode / loading consideration, make sure that you aren't loading the circuit in the idle state (bias the load up to mid-supply or AC couple).

Yes, I did find the examples in the datasheet & user’s guide about using the integrated midscale buffer, and we are planning to do so with ac-coupling on input & output. I was mostly wondering whether there are any significant performance penalties for using single supply, and whether you had any characterization data for single supply.

You won't see any performance penalties with proper biasing.
