LM393-N: LM393-N replaced with LM393P

Part Number: LM393-N
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM393, LM393B

Hi Team,

in the face of the shortage of the LM393-N, the LM393P was proposed to me. The replacement can be done without modifying my circuit or the two comparators are perfectly compatible.

Kind Regard

  • The LM393-N was originally made by National Semiconductor and later acquired by TI. The LM393/LM393B are made by TI. All of them are designed to be compatible with each other. If you stay within the datasheet limits, the replacement is guaranteed to work, but if your circuit relies on some specific implementation detail, it might not.

  • Hi Clemens,

the components at the level of bias current or even for the power supply are not the same LM393N has the possibility of having
    single or dual power supplies.

  • All,

For 99% of the applications, the LM393 and LM393-N are interchangeable. Marginal designs that push a particular spec or behavior may have issues, but most apps will not even notice the difference between the two.

Like op-amps, comparators can be used in both single and dual supplies, but beware that the output will swing "low" to the negative voltage and not ground. So level shifting may be required for ground-referenced logic signals.

We highly recommend using the new "B" version for new designs.
