Hi team,

I have a customer asking if we have any "chips for doing low data rate power line communications over 5 volts DC" that's one-way and in a smaller footprint. I saw this design guide/devkit from about a decade ago, but I was curious if there's something more recent I can share. Let me know what you think and if I should get back to the customer with any follow-up questions. Thanks!

    Could you define the smaller footprint in mm^2 in area or L x H x W in volume? 

    Per your inquiry, THVD8000 may be more suitable, because this is digital PLC communication solution. PRAMPS team does not support the product line, but RS486 may have the solution. AFE030/AFE031/AFE032 NB-PLC solution is not small footprint, if your application is for low voltage DC communication. 

    AFE030/AFE031/AFE032 NB-PLC can be modified for low DC voltage PLC solution, but I think that THVD8000 may suit your application better.

    THVD8000 is indeed created for communication over power lines, using RS485-type communication scheme. What kind of data rates are you using? I see you say over 5V, which is possible. I've assigned this to one of our experts for the THVD8000 to comment further.

    Feedback from customer:

    The THVD8000 looks like it would work well.  I think I am going to try and implement this first using discrete components and the microcontroller timer output to generate the carrier wave for OOK .  I think the THVD8000 will be overkill for us because the power line length will be less than half an inch long.  

    • Footprint Constraint (in mm^2 area or LxHxW volume):   4mm x 4mm would be about the largest we could go.
    • Price Target:    Ideally less than $1
    • Project Name:   Wireless coating thickness probe
    • Projected Annual Volume:  1k
    • Targeted Production Date  September to October 2024

    This is our only solution for something like this in our TRX portfolio.
