LM339: What does absolute maximum case temperature mean inside the device?

Part Number: LM339
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM139A-MIL

Hello,

I noticed that LM339 has an absolute maximum spec for case temperature for 60s. It is much higher than the maximum storage temperature and the maximum operating virtual-junction temperature. How is the maximum case temperature for 60s determined? Is that the temperature and amount of time that would be required for the die to heat past the maximum storage temp or operating virtual junction temp? Or is that the maximum temp the package itself can handle before melting? Or something else?

Thank you!

Best regards,
