LM358: Output current of OpAmp

Part Number: LM358

Tool/software:

The output current of the OpAmp LM358 is given as source and sink. I am wondering what's the difference between them. How it differ then Short-circuit current ?

  • Regarding source/sink output current, I guess when the OpAmp output is powering another circuit then we refer to output source current of OpAmp as maximum current that load could have. I am not sure if it make any sense ?

The output sink current we refer when the direction of current is from external circuit into the OpAmp output.

  • Hi John,

Sinking or sourcing current depends on the direction of current flow into or out of the amplifier based on the load termination. Please refer to the claw curves in the typical characteristics to see how the output voltage changes based on output sink or source current (Figure 6-46, 6-47).

Short circuit current spec is the current limit where the op amp cannot output swing properly as highlighted in the below graph:

Please also see Section 3.4 in the Applications Design guidelines Clemens linked above on more information on the short circuit current for the LM358 specifically.

We also have a video explaining output limitations such as output current and short circuit current: http://ti.com/video/6279999026001

    Best regards,
